Lie to me…

Nik has been talking to Shelly in his bedroom for a while. I’m eager to know what they have discussed. I have my own questions. It burns a little that Shelly seems to trust Nik more to talk to him first.

Maybe he is just better at pushing her. I’m going to have to let Lucien have his way and try harder at getting her to open up.

“They’re coming, Luce. Get away from the doorway,” I hiss in my brother’s mind before he gets caught eavesdropping.

I’m sure he didn’t get to hear everything. Things had gone pretty quiet in the bedroom except for the sound of Shelly crying. It had been hard not to burst in there and instead give our alpha leader a chance first.

Nik knows Shelly the least, but he has still tried. We ought to be grateful.

Lucien looks like he would rather be licking boots than give Nik any thanks. My twin doesn’t appreciate anyone that makes Shelly cry. We have been the cause of enough tears ourselves to not tolerate others giving her grief.

Guilt does awful things to perception.

Shelly comes out first, her head down and carrying something close to her body. It takes me a moment to recognize the box that I left for Notes, now mostly hidden in her grasp.

“Is that—?” I cut off, knowing it is without asking.

“How close did Notes get to you?” Lucien asks, practically seething with suppressed rage. “I’ll feed that box to him right up his—”

“Luce!” yells Shelly, interrupting Lucien before he can get too graphic. There is a fiery blush lighting up her cheeks, which already look blotchy from her earlier crying.

“Explain!” Lucien orders, crossing his arms over his chest.

Fuck. This is going poorly.

“I hired a guy—uh, Notes, I guess—to do Nik a favour, so I could ask for you guys to do something similar—and illegal—for me.”

My eyebrows both go up. That is not what I expected to hear.

Lucien snorts. “Seriously? That is a lie, CeCe.”

Shelly actually sticks her tongue out at him, then stomps over to the couch to sit down. The box goes on the coffee table. Her cell phone is still clutched in her hand.

“That kind of reaction is why I couldn’t ask you directly,” Shelly says, looking at me instead of Lucien.

Nik comes up behind the couch and puts his hands on her shoulders, massaging them gently.

“Come on, Shell. You know it does sound like a lie. Goody two-shoes like yourself, asking us to commit a crime? We need a motive, and it better not be clean,” Nik says.

“I already explained enough earlier,” she retorts, shrugging under his touch.

Nik growls at her. “No, you only told me you want us to plant something in your uncle’s studio, like we did for Notes, but not why. I’m sure we will all find the reason for your request much more interesting than the task.”

I realize we are getting into the middle of the conversation they had been having in Nik’s room alone.

“Is Nik talking about your monster uncle?” Lucien asks, taking the words right from my head.
